Yes, magic. The mages are integrated with the rest of the army, but not everyone is a mage. Most people can do small spells but not everyone has a strong enough luonto, or the ability to hear trolls and beasts, which is where the borderline of actually being a mage is.
[At least he's not one of those people who doesn't believe in magic, like the Danes and Swedes, and a few people he's run into here. In fact, he seems pretty familiar with the concept of magic.]
