[ well, there are instinctive reactions one might have towards the sound of someone calling to save another. there are people who might run in the opposite direction, operating under the very reasonable assumption that if someone needs saving from something, that's their cue to save themselves before they, too, are in need of saving. there are people who might run over to take a look, operating under the also very reasonable assumption that if someone needs saving, there's probably a spectacle to be seen and possibly a reel that they can post onto social media so that other people can also do some equal-opportunity rubbernecking.

and then, there's kaveh.

the moment the cry rises out of the ballpit, kaveh's already moving towards it. he skids to a stop, gaze skimming the surface of the pit as if expecting someone to have choked on a plastic ball of some kind, and then - huh.
