WE WERE DREAMING, WAITING FOR NIGHT.
» THE PARK — INTRODUCTORY NOTES
When District 3 opens up, subtle and silent at first, the most noticeable area is the large park. A mixture of open picnic fields and heavily wooded trails, the park offers an escape from the cityscapes for those who seek an oasis amongst nature. Benches and light posts dot the twisting paths, offering a moment's rest to anyone traversing the park for a leisurely stroll or running for… exercise. Unlike its smaller cousin to the south, this park is devoid of statues or monuments, instead more of a tribute to nature and the pursuit of its company. There are, however, several small playgrounds spread around the outer edges for anyone who seeks some playtime with their inner child.
Speaking of your inner child, should you venture to the southern half of the park, you'll find a small carnival that appears to be abandoned. The rides and stalls all appear to be in decent condition despite lying still and silent; if you choose to hop the fence, you'll find that the cables running haphazardly over the grass are connected but powerless. No amount of effort to turn on the rides nor break into the games will prove fruitful, but the park at large has posters stapled to trees here and there advertising the opening of the fun fair very, very soon.
For those who are brave enough to leave the paved walkways to venture deeper into nature, you may find hidden gems—a quiet pond covered in lilypads with a small dock to sit on and dip your feet into the green waters; a romantic pair of swings atop a small knoll overlooking a creek; a shortcut through the trees where even your footsteps are muted by the leaves and dappled sunlight barely reaches your face through the trees above. Here and there you'll find the woods open up to a secluded meadow where the grass is tall and the wildflowers grow thick.
You may also find yourself imagining things just out of reach, like shadowy figures darting from bush to bush, predatory in nature. The phantom call of a crow may echo through the forest's canopy though, like the rest of the city, there is no wildlife to be seen nor heard otherwise. Was that the shout of a woman in the distance, or the cry of a fox? The longer time stretches on, the harder you'll find it is to make your way back out of the treeline, and the trees stretch far above to block out any hope of navigating back to the familiar buildings of the surrounding city. You might want to call for help—if you get find service for your device, that is.
The new park is a permanent location that is open to residents 24/7 as there are no fences nor gates. It's larger than the one new City Hall and has more potential for exploring as well as different features from its cousin. For those that are familiar, it will evoke thoughts of New York's Central Park with its mixture of open areas contrasting with thick woods. Paved walkways, freshwater ponds, picnic areas, and a couple of playgrounds can all be found throughout the park. Along with these, residents may stumble upon other natural and man-made areas such as rocky outcrops, unmarked trails, bicycle paths, fountains, and other things typically found in large urban parks—minus the wildlife. It can be a romantic setting as easily as it can be a horrific one depending on the time of day as well as the company that you keep.

THEN THE HEAT BROKE, THE NIGHT WAS CLEAR.
» THE FAIR — RIDES & ATTRACTIONS
At 6:00 PM City time on September 19th, the numerous light bulbs of the fun fair burst into blinding color simultaneously, lighting up the darkening sky as loud carnival music slowly churns to life from unseen speakers. The rides all spring into motion, operating on a strict schedule that will allow carnival-goers the time to get on the ride as well as stumble back off after they've had their fun. No one is running the rides that you can see, though they all have the typical podium with an array of buttons that could be used to start and stop the machinery that creaks and groans with age. If you'd like to see what it's like working as a rider operator, you're more than welcome—just make sure you're not making everyone sick.
Due to the fair's small size, the rides are all fairly tame in size and speed. There's a merry-go-round with brightly painted horses to ride along with a handful of mermaids, sculpted hair permanently billowing in the wind. One section at the edge is dedicated to a massive stationary head, evocative of a ventriloquist's dummy, with its mouth gaping open for riders to sit inside, perched on the tongue-shaped bench. For the braver riders, a few other unnerving steeds await, such as a lion with blood dripping from its teeth and claws, a zebra with eight legs, an uncomfortably hairy tarantula, and a gray-skinned creature with its eyeless head split open into a massive mess of razor-sharp teeth. Though the merry-go-round spins at a leisurely pace, staying on if for too long is likely to induce a strange sense of dizziness even after disembarking and attempting to walk it off. The repetitive groan of the pipe organ rings in your ears, hardly helping your disorientation at all though you seek a quiet place to recuperate.
Further along in the fair is a low building comprised of little more than a laminate floor, metal grating roof, and bright red railing that encloses all sides. Strewn about inside are bumper cars, big enough for two if you want to squish in together with a friend, but lacking seatbelts. As you run to find a car you like, you can hear the electricity begin to hum through the roof and spark with the bent antennae of each car as their motors awaken. Loud rock music drowns out the sound of squealing wheels as the drivers begin the arduous task of steering the bumper cars into each other. It's all fun and games at first, but it's easy for a little competition to turn into a grudge match.
The last ride looks like a large metal bowl with steep sides painted dark blue and covered with stars, plantes, galaxies, and a comically simplistic spaceship. The archway standing just in front of the ride's entrance calls it "THE GRAVI-ATOR" with a disclaimer in small print about holding on tightly to personal belongings once on the ride. Stepping into the door cut out in one side, you'll find there are no straps nor seats—everyone should find themselves a comfortable place to lean, preferably in one of the spots that has padding on the walls, because soon the ride will begin to spin and everyone will be pinned down by centrifugal force.
Though they may not be as thrilling as the mechanical rides, there are a few tamer attractions for those seeking a break from the bright lights and loud sounds of the carnival. A hall of mirrors stands to one side of the area, a gaping clown mouth serving as the entrance to the dark building. The laughter and screams from outside are quickly muffled as atmospheric music plays lowly while you try to navigate through a maze of mirrors, many of which distort your appearance. You may see flashes of people that you don't remember seeing come inside, oddly shaped and shadowy where the corners of two mirrors meet. Did you feel someone brush up against you? No, impossible in such tight corridors, but you should probably hurry along to the exit.
There is also, of course, a tunnel of love, though it is a cheap imitation of one. Rather than sitting in a romantic gondola, those interested in going through will do so on foot—a rather daunting task considering that you'll be in the dark once you walk through the heart-shaped door and through the musty red curtains. Still, there's enough time to steal a kiss, or grasp blindly for a hand to hold if you're scared of the dark. Has your lover always had such cold, rough hands? It might be soothing in the muggy warmth you find inside, or maybe it's reason enough to find the way out on your own.
Located in the southern half of the large park is a small fun fair that will open to the public the evening of September 19 with operating hours from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM City time. Before opening, none of the rides or games will be operational; however, there will be fliers advertising its opening all around the city on billboards and telephone poles, and adventurous characters are able to hop the fence and explore if they so desire. However, they will not be able to turn on any of the rides or games, and will not be able to break into the rides or booths under any circumstances.
Upon opening, there will be a number of rides running themselves on a schedule that allows people time to get on, have some fun, and then get back off again. Though there's something unsettling about the music they play, or maybe how shaky they feel, there's no apparent danger anywhere. Residents are encouraged to enjoy themselves with a group of friends, or maybe a date, and experience all that the fun fair has to offer! The fair will not be open forever, though; its gates will close permanently at 11:00 PM on September 30 and all traces will disappear that night to leave a large, open field behind in the park.
This is a good, ol' fashioned carnival designed to bring together groups of people for thrills and fun. Though there are no overt game mechanics at play, we encourage everyone to get creative and add their own flair to this month's event. If you have any questions about player plots you'd like to run, please revisit the Events & Interactions section of the F.A.Q. and drop us a comment on the mod contact for any additional questions.

IT SEEMED AN HONOR TO HAVE A MOUTH.
» THE FUN — GAMES & FOOD
The majority of the fair is occupied by stalls full of fair games, their walls and awnings decorated in various themes to match. The shooting gallery is a scene from the American West, cowboys astride horses with a background of cacti and orange rocky mesas. The targets themselves are a variety of desert animals: vultures flying from the roof, lizards skittering along the ground, and coyotes chasing rabbits throughout the middle. A handful of rifles are waiting along the half wall in front, chained and bolted to the wooden surface to keep them from getting carried off, and an array of hats hang above them as prizes displayed for winners. There are the typical cowboy hats, then some pink and green ones, some multi-colored jester hats, and a few that look like uncomfortably realistic rubber masks of faces twisted into horrifying expressions.
The next stall over is as different as can be imagined with psychedelic rainbows, glow-in-the-dark smiley faces, and paint splotches covering all surfaces. Inside is a grid of brightly colored balloons that rain silver glitter once they're popped. Cups of plastic darts lie in wait for those who wish to try their luck to pop five balloons in a row, though the observant will notice there are only four darts per cup. The sides are lined with prizes ranging from sticky fingers, slide whistles, and bouncy balls to an assortment of blow-up weapons such swords, hammers, maces, and frying pans.
Another quintessential carnival game is ring toss, set up in an extra large stall with three open sides for groups to play together if they wish. The bottles are all uniform in size, shape, and their clear color, but if you get a good look at a few, some appear to have items floating inside of them, suspended in glowing liquid. Above, massive stuffed animals hang from every possible section of the ceiling. None of them look quite right, though, such as the smiling bear with an extra row of teeth or the goose with two heads at the end of one floppy neck. The dog is pretty cute, but it's missing an arm and a leg in a way that appears intentional, and that cat has its eyes sewn shut.
Of course, no fair would be complete without food. There are plenty of stalls ready to serve, much like the restaurants in the city, where residents are welcome to swing by for some greasy grub. Corn dogs, fries, funnel cake, pizza, shaved ice, and fried junk food are all easy to find around the carnival. Spread amongst the stalls are popcorn machines playing cheerful music, carts with towering racks of bagged cotton candy, and poles planted in the ground with rainbow lollipops and candied apples sprouting from them. In one corner of the fair where the biggest concentration of food stalls can be found, there is an area of tables with umbrellas for anyone to sit and eat. Food at the fair adheres to it's own unique reset cycle and can be found replenished every evening at 6:00PM just in time for opening.
Despite the potential for danger from the shooting gallery and balloon dart games, both are designed to be as harmless as possible—the bullets are rubber, and the darts are made of plastic. While they will still leave a bruise, there shouldn't be risk of blood loss. The shooting gallery guns are chained in place, unable to be stolen. Removing the darts from their stall will result in thiefs walking in a tight circle that always brings them back in hopes the darts will be restored to their rightful place.
Though the food and games are free, the prizes are not—anyone who attempts to steal prizes without winning the games first will find themselves misplacing their items before leaving the carnival. If residents become aware of this phenomenon and try extra hard to focus on not losing their stolen prize, it will nevertheless slip from their hands and be lost—though a keen eye might see it back in its rightful place at the game stall. If you have the right temperament, this could become a game in and of itself!
Additionally, if there are any fair games or foods that have not been explicitly mentioned above, players are welcome to assume they can be found. Nothing as extravagant as a theme park or amusement park will be present as all of the stalls are designed to be mobile—this is a traveling carnival, after all. Similarly, players are welcome to design their own brand of unsettling game prizes as long as none of them can be used as an actual weapon or to otherwise harm fellow fair-goers.

WILDCARD.
The city is by no means small, and there are plenty of things for you to see. There's no rush in exploring, so feel free to take your time looking around and peering into various nooks and crannies and alleyways—and don't worry, you're not very likely to find anything peering back.
If none of the above prompts appeal, feel free to check out the Locations and Maps pages and write your own freestyle prompt using one or many of the available locations.
This month's event headers come from "Midsummer" by Louise Gluck.

I… Uh…
[ The first thing that hits him when he actually looks properly is that the teenager doesn’t look like any of the others he’s met so far, they all seem to come from time much more modern, the style is different, jeans worn lower and looser, shirts that don’t cling to their bodies. He’s dressed in a style much more familiar, somewhat similar to Wills tight grey shirt, flannel and high waisted jeans, worn with a belt, even if they are a bit paint stained now but a little more edgy than he has the guts to wear.
The second is oh, pretty… In fact almost the exact type that would catch Wills eye more if he weren’t quite so hung up on just the one. He has the same kind of boyish yet ethereal quality that Mike has grown into and honestly it makes Will a little flustered and tongue tied, though he’ll happily play it off as just startled by somebody talking to him. Hopefully. ]
No, I was just thinking about messaging my friends to see if any of them are here.
[ He would really appreciate his face not feeling quite so flushed or like he’s stumbling over his words but there’s a pretty boy who has chosen out of all the people he could approach to talk to him. He’s regrettably used to it from girls and having to shimmy awkwardly out of talking to them but not this and it probably shows. ]
Are you meeting anyone or braving the fair alone?
[ He’s never seen the boy before but there are new faces around again and talk of setting up a place to welcome newcomers so maybe he isn’t aware that everything here seems to come with a sting in the tail. ]
no subject
[ Armand's smile is hopeful, body language easy, but something perhaps nervous or tentative in the way he flexes his hands, raising them to fiddle distractedly with the array of rings adorning them. ]
...Unless you would rather wait for your friends response of course.
[ He's drawn a little closer, but still respectful of Will's space, dark eyes intent on his face when they're not flicking to the faire with uncontained excitement. Armand has always been attracted to the curious, those with clumsy emotions much like his own and he gets the sense that this young man hides so much potential that he wants to pull at those strings. ]
no subject
I’m sure I’ll run into them in there. [ He gives a casual shrug and small smile, so far he hasn’t really encountered anyone here who he’s genuinely had reason to be afraid of bar one and besides he’s made friends with a few others around his age already. ] I didn’t want to go alone, this place isn’t always as welcoming as it comes across.
[ Bank doors slamming, flashbacks to his worst moments, creepy fortunes reminding him to feel guilty for things he did in an attempt at helping, all of it left him with a distrust of any events, though the welcome party during his first weeks hadn’t done anything overtly bad to anyone that he knows of, so maybe this will be the same. ]
You know, [ Will steps forward signalling that they can indeed go in together ] I don’t think I’ve seen you around and I’m pretty sure I’d remember if I had, are you new? [ his tone remains light and neutral as intended because Will is absolutely not brave enough to ever be overtly flirtatious but it’s definitely meant as a compliment ]
no subject
Oh, I have heard such things from the network - and yes. I arrived perhaps two weeks ago? But I must admit I have kept to myself for the most part..
[ As they approach the entrance they're shoulder to shoulder and Armand is momentarily distracted by the lights as night truly begins to descend upon them. It's pretty, calming and on a whim of a similar moment, years past now - with another pretty boy awkwardly, but gently flirting with him - he reaches out and slips his ringed fingers through Will's, turning to smile, disarming and bright as he does so. ]
We will keep each other safe, no? I am Armand, by the way. What would you like to do first...?
no subject
Oh, that’s not that long then. I’ve been here a few months now. It’s still a mystery though.
[ He has to try very hard not to act like some kind of Victorian maiden about the sudden contact, or nostalgic for a time when his friends (Mike) would hold his hand and it wasn’t weird or awkward and it didn’t matter what other people might think before it was ripped away by puberty and caring what other people might think and -
God he hopes his hand isn’t clammy. If he’d expected it he might have wiped it on his jeans before Armand had the chance, the coolness of his rings is nice against the warmth of Wills skin, just a little warmer than a regular human, like he’s running a permanent fever.
It’s not helped by Armands bright smile which makes his face feel warmer too. ]
I’ll do my best, I’m Will.
[ He looks away, up at the lights and thinks on it for a moment. The music is a little discordant but it doesn’t seem harmful… ]
Want to walk around and see what there is? The rides look interesting.
no subject
[ Armand repeats his name, smile gone soft, private, his accent rolling the syllables with different emphasis. He nods in agreement, enjoying Will's overly warm mortal heat, weaving slowly around the attractions and the crowd that's been drawn here. ]
There is another from my world that has been here as long. To count this stay in months already... You mentioned your friends - are they new to you here or of your world to?
[ He's curious if others have been drawn in groups as has happened with his own companions and equally concerned with the expansion of connections. Most of the beings and mortals here have been welcoming, all jut as bemused, but Armand wonders if they will see factions form in the future.
As they walk and converse, he points out games, interesting treats, but does not drop the tether of their hands, content until an activity or game pulls them apart and even then, he repairs the contact, insistent but gentle each time. ]
no subject
[ Steve and Eddie both are and from almost the same time too, though he doesn’t know Steve well and he only knows of Eddie really. Will had thought when moving in near them he would end up sticking with them but this is the first time he’s actually considered telling either where he is.
And then there’s Henry, which is a whole can of worms of its own. ]
I only really started considering them friends recently because they were all really cool about some dumb shit people got put through here.
I think it’ll be easier to find people when the welcome diner is sorted out, some people I know have been discussing setting one up and I’ve offered to do the visual stuff because I think it’s better if people know they have places to go for support.
[ He isn’t the only person who shut himself away for weeks on end and he knows it’s hard to reach out but it should be better if they have somewhere directly offering a place to go.
It’s nice walking around and just talking, occasionally stopping to check stuff out. The fair itself seems like it’s non-threatening and Will begins to thaw to the place as he traverses it and finds nothing dangerous except the ability to mess with the ride controls. ]
Did you find your people through the network or just bump into them?
no subject
[ Armand has yet to offer such help - too wary with his growing hunger of being around so many mortals at once should they reach out in turn - and though that has been resolved for now, he's still hesitant, but also craves such gatherings. ]
Oh, those from my home I found by chance and word of mouth - the network has been very illuminating for finding others though..
[ His night with Johanna stands out bright his mind and that's not even including being thrown together with Ethan after Armand's transgression against Loki. It's certainly been an eventful few weeks..
They circle back round to the other side of the main avenue of stalls and Armand's eyes light up at the sight of one of the games - or more importantly, the prizes. He tugs Will with him in his excitement, pointing with his free hand. ]
Look at these creatures! I think that one there may even be bigger than me.
[ He's pointing directly at what looks like a grizzly bear, all large claws and wow, that's a lot of sharp teeth for one bear to have.. Armand seems un-phased though and turns his large eyes on Will. ]
Would you like to play?
no subject
Yeah that’s probably a smart idea, I know some of us are also insomniacs so I would hang around late but I’m pretty sure I’ll get sent home.
[ He can’t imagine Mr LaRusso wanting to let him stay late at night when he should be home and
aimlessly doing art or staring at the walls or singing to himself due to the lack of musicin bed.Creatures is probably a good word for the strange assortment of stuffed animals. The bear with too many teeth is a stand out but Will zeroes in on a dragon with three heads and way more eyes than necessary. ]
We should absolutely try but I can’t guarantee I’ll be very good at it.
[ It’s not modesty, it’s genuine, he’s alright enough at anything resembling a video game but when it comes to ring toss and other such games? Well he’ll give it his best, especially because Armand looks so excited about the prizes on offer. ]
no subject
[ He keep's his gaze forward, stepping up to the game and gathering up the allotment of rings in one hand. At the not quite question/offer, he glances at Will - a more subdued smile twisting his lips - Armand has nothing but time with the moon is high, vampires are universal constants like that. ]
Don't feel so bad - these games are often rigged, you know? the rings or the targets the wrong sizes or some other ruse - but I have seen other's with prizes, so one of the games here must pay out.
[ Armand says this while sorting through the rings in his hands, no obvious differences, but also he's testing the weight. with his speed and accuracy, he could probably win this first try - but where is the fun in that? He takes a few turns, aim off, but distance accurate, grumbling whenever he misses and encouraging Will's progress with bright words. ]
no subject
[ He has trouble sleeping most nights, it has been better since he got his hands on a nightlight and glow in the dark stars and hasn’t been trying to sleep with a full sized lamp on.
And he wouldn’t exactly put it like that, it’s not that he expects to be turned away, more that he expects to be parented due to his age and the fact he hasn’t outright said that he struggles to sleep. ]
That’s true, [ Will sizes up the hoops and the pegs he’s meant to be landing them on ] but even not rigged I’m not sure it can make up for my lack of skill in gym class. [ the only class he gets lower grades in is math.
But it’s worth a try, so Will throws a few rings and mostly doesn’t hit any of them because they fall short or go too far. Then again he wants to win something so he doesn’t look like a total loser. ]
no subject
[ A little too peaceful for Armand's tastes. Without the trappings of humanity - his movies, books, magazines - it's slowly becoming untenable, but he tries not to think too much on that for the moment.
He throws another ring, gasps when it laps one of the pegs, but ultimately slings off into the back of the booth and scowls at the result. ]
Ah! So close!
[ Armand shifts his footing and picks up another handful of rings. ]
Well there's no currency - we have nothing but time and I don't think gym class would prepare you for this anyhow!
[ He laughs, flicking another dud ring, but is clearly just as determined. ]
no subject
And he can’t really tell anyone the reason he gets too nervous to walk around at night - I’m scared of the dark sounds so childish. ]
Yeah, I don’t think they accounted for the insomniacs when they didn’t give us any form of media.
[ Throwing accurately is hard, he always goes too long or the ring doesn’t go very far. The one he throws goes too far left and Will isn’t even sure how he managed to throw on a slant. ]
I dunno, my old school used to make us play dodgeball, that requires you to be able to throw something and hit a target. [ When you’re not sitting out because someone threw a ball so hard at your face that your nose started bleeding and rubbed salt in the wound by hissing names at you while you try not to show you’re upset about it. ]
But I was always taken out first anyway.
no subject
[ It's as if by saying it, that Armand has summoned it. Almost directly after the words leave his mouth, a ring he wasn't really paying attention to, laps a peg and finally settles with a victorious clatter. ]
You see?! Will! Which creature do you like most?
[ He claps his hands, excited, already gazing up at the array of sinister faces, before looking at Will with a grin. ]
Take whichever you wish!
no subject
He’s pulled out of that train of thought by Armand succeeding at the game. ]
I dunno, I think I’m more motivated by wanting to win you something back!
[ Will has to stretch on to his tiptoes to get the prize he wants, it’s a three headed dragon and it’s probably among the strangest prizes available but it reminds him of Tiamat and he needs it.
The plush itself gets to sit on the side and observe him failing to hit targets until he gets past frustrated and hits the point where he just laughs whenever he fails.
Up until he’s almost ready to admit defeat and apologise for sucking so bad when the ring hits the top, wobbles and he thinks in that split second that it’s going to fall straight off but it doesn’t and honestly he spends a moment in stunned disbelief before turning around with a bright smile.
]
Sorry that took so long but go ahead and grab a prize!
no subject
A most handsome, dragon - ah, what an excellent choice!
[ He's supportive and touched by Will's determination, offering support from the side lines and cheering him on. When the final hoop finally lands, Armand whoops, punching the air, before throwing his arms around Will's shoulders and pressing a there and gone, kiss to his cheek. He has to go up onto his toes to do so and as he pulls away, Armand drags a large brown bear down from it's peg, grinning and flushed as he looks at Will. The plush is almost as big as he is! ]
Thank you for being so persistent, Will - and look at our spoils - this fellow will make a welcome addition to my apartment.
[ Was it calculated? A little. He barely caught the unrest in Will's thoughts before and well - he can't let the shame sit unattended. Too much of his life has been bound up in a similar fashion - though never for his attraction in other men - so this, this he can give freely, a token. You're safe, we're the same in this he thinks silently to himself and hugs the bear tight to his chest. ]
no subject
Thankfully the train of thought doesn’t distract from his mission and he gets to witness Armands reaction to him finally winning even if Wills triumphant grin turns to doe-eyed shock at the kiss on his cheek. Brazen, fearless, Armand doesn’t seem to stop to think about it as Will presses two fingers to the spot for a moment. ]
He’s a fantastic bear! [ He’s enormous, almost the same size as Armand, enough to make Will wonder how convenient it’s going to be to drag such a beast through the rest of the fair. ] Are you going to name him?
[ Will scoops Tiamat under his arm and decides that’s absolutely what he’s naming her, nerd shame be damned. ] What next? Rides or more ridiculous games?
no subject
The bear looks up at him as he turns it to face him and Armand makes a hum of consideration. He's a ferocious looking thing, but just as soft as the dragon in Will's arms and it only takes him a moment to settle on a name and most importantly, a title. ]
Conte Orso - Conte Edmond Orso, yes that is his name.
[ He nods, saying the name with all the gravity allotted to naming a nobleman and grins as he hefts the large plush back against his chest. The Count of Montecristo was one of Daniels favourite books and Armand has always had a soft spot for Dumas himself. Yes, Edmond it is. ]
Oh, the rides certainly! Do you think we will be able to fit our new friends into the little carts with us?
[ The idea is hilarious to him and Armand laughs brightly as he begins making his way in the direction of the nearest ride to find out. ]
Oh! What will you name your dragon, Will?
