So you're unaware. Maybe new. Or maybe you just didn't care the first time you saw it. That's fine. Between the banners hanging around key areas, and the flyers quickly drawn up in a similar fashion scattered across the city, it's hard not to know something is going on -- and there's helpful arrows, chalked on building walls and the streets the day of the party, to let people know where to go.

The Rooftop

A splendid scene awaits those who travel heavensward. Fairy lights connect the corners of the roof access building to metal poles at the corners of the building itself, lifted by cylindrical supports where needed, each one held straight by pots filled with well-packed dirty and stone. There's multicolored stars hanging from some of the lights, while various painted flowers hang on others, and what greets the ears first is some royalty free party music played from a CD player off the the side.

There's a long folded out table in the center for those who'd like to share cuisine, just set and serve yourself! Nearby is a space for Daan to do some bartending as well, a man who can make a multitude of cocktails and mocktails for those who want something less alcoholic. Also, pints of various ice cream flavors in a cooler!

Don't worry -- they won't have any odd effects on them, Don verified the lack of them herself. Not all of them are normal. Think loaded baked potato weird.

For those who'd like a quieter space, there's beanbags and a swirly, fuzzy carpet to sit on more away from the center of the party area. This'll be a great time to play some games, such as truth or dare, spin the bottle, and... whatever else you play at parties. Get to know your fellow man and such. Play the violin.

Naturally, no party... hosted... by Don Quixote would be without a space to fight, if one wishes to show off a little! It's also taking place on a swirly fuzzy carpet, just so no one smashes their head in, and there's a neat little banner hanging down from a string of lights that says thus:

What the prize is, no one knows. But come find Don Quixote with your battle scars and she'll grant it -- and stick around a while, 'cause this party's gonna end with a bang... that is, with homemade fireworks donated by "a friend" through Junpei.

Anyway, have fun!!! Share words about your worlds!!! The society your characters are from, the cuisine they've brought, how they're working out in the city -- help the new kids along, too. There's more vets here now than there were a few months ago, after all.

There's actual music, for one, and there's no bouncy castle, for another. I assume 'cause a human -- a person put this one on instead of the City.

[ She really has to not assume people are human around here. Get with the times and update your language, Constantine. ]

Or whoever's or whatever's running the place. I'm of the opinion it's the City.

[ A sigh. ] If you want to talk theories, I want another drink and somewhere to sit. What do you say?

[ She sounds grumpy, still, but it's starting to soften. Trying to solve a puzzle is somewhat more familiar than existential dread and frustration. And maybe a new Morpheus, or an amnesiac Morpheus, or whatever the hell is going on here, will have new insights. ]

[ he gives a shallow nod, indicating that she should lead wherever she wants them to go. ]

[ First things first: she leads the way towards the bar. ]

I think we know more about what this place isn't than what it is, really. I don't think it's Hell, and I know it's not your realm. A few people think it's virtual, like we've been uploaded into a computer or something.

[ Pouring herself a gin, she gives Dream a wry look. ] I don't know that you're terribly digitizable.

[ he follows sedately behind her, merely standing with her at the counter while she pours for herself. he ignores whatever that last statement though, whatever it is she said. ]

It is certainly not the Dreaming. Nor is it Hell. It is ... in-between.

Does that mean you know what it is? Or where?

Unfortunately neither. I can sense nothing beyond this realm.

[ She makes a face that's half-disgusted, half-resigned, and nods. ]

There's not much to sense in it, either. I tried some divination and it was -- weird.

[ he tilts his head a bit. ]

How so?

Like, a city ought to have -- nodes, like. Places of power. Places of significance, that stand out from the rest of the astral landscape. And this place ...

[ She turns her hand flat and slides it through the air, as if running it over a completely smooth table. ]

It's all the same. Like the proverbial fucking millpond.

[ his head tilts just a little more. ]

That is strange. Perhaps those places of significance, as you put it, are beyond our reach.

If they exist, they must be. There's a lot of the City we can't get to. Hob and I tried to get through the tunnels and just got looped back around.

If it's not a real city, or if we're the first people to ever live here, maybe they just don't exist.

That you were redirected lends to the notion of it being elsewhere. A means of protecting itself.

There is also the possibility that the entire City is a being unto itself.

[ She snaps her fingers and points at him. Evidently her previous annoyance is going to be put aside thanks to a) gin and b) vindication. ]

That's what I've been thinking! What if it's its own entity? Nobody's running it, it's running itself.

Hey, do cities dream?

[ he stares down at the finger pointed at him. excuse you. ]

As any other thing that lives can.

[ How do you knock out a city? There's got to be a way. New York may never sleep, but a smaller place like this ... ]

Not necessarily, as it is always possible to dream while still awake.

[ Johanna blinks, and then snorts. ]

I forgot what talking to you is like.

[ he frowns lightly in confusion. ]

Sometimes it's like talking to a baritone fortune cookie, is all. But you mean it as more than a nice phrase.
