So you're unaware. Maybe new. Or maybe you just didn't care the first time you saw it. That's fine. Between the banners hanging around key areas, and the flyers quickly drawn up in a similar fashion scattered across the city, it's hard not to know something is going on -- and there's helpful arrows, chalked on building walls and the streets the day of the party, to let people know where to go.

The Rooftop

A splendid scene awaits those who travel heavensward. Fairy lights connect the corners of the roof access building to metal poles at the corners of the building itself, lifted by cylindrical supports where needed, each one held straight by pots filled with well-packed dirty and stone. There's multicolored stars hanging from some of the lights, while various painted flowers hang on others, and what greets the ears first is some royalty free party music played from a CD player off the the side.

There's a long folded out table in the center for those who'd like to share cuisine, just set and serve yourself! Nearby is a space for Daan to do some bartending as well, a man who can make a multitude of cocktails and mocktails for those who want something less alcoholic. Also, pints of various ice cream flavors in a cooler!

Don't worry -- they won't have any odd effects on them, Don verified the lack of them herself. Not all of them are normal. Think loaded baked potato weird.

For those who'd like a quieter space, there's beanbags and a swirly, fuzzy carpet to sit on more away from the center of the party area. This'll be a great time to play some games, such as truth or dare, spin the bottle, and... whatever else you play at parties. Get to know your fellow man and such. Play the violin.

Naturally, no party... hosted... by Don Quixote would be without a space to fight, if one wishes to show off a little! It's also taking place on a swirly fuzzy carpet, just so no one smashes their head in, and there's a neat little banner hanging down from a string of lights that says thus:

What the prize is, no one knows. But come find Don Quixote with your battle scars and she'll grant it -- and stick around a while, 'cause this party's gonna end with a bang... that is, with homemade fireworks donated by "a friend" through Junpei.

Anyway, have fun!!! Share words about your worlds!!! The society your characters are from, the cuisine they've brought, how they're working out in the city -- help the new kids along, too. There's more vets here now than there were a few months ago, after all.

fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, Reno is rather hard to embarrass. he does have to spend a minute thinking, looking up at the sky and muttering rhyme to himself, but once he has something that he thinks is pretty acceptable, he does indeed hop up on a table—one that's absent any plates or full glasses, at least—and takes a dramatic bow before he recites, still counting syllables on his fingers: ]

truthfully he's not even looking for special treatment, just camaraderie. ]

[ he means himself, of course, being at this point about two days fresh to the city. ]

The pleasure is mine! And prithee, think nothing of it -- in truth, I had hoped to catch some new faces among the old, for something like this is far more useful to thee than to those of us who've been here long.

[ get connections, find some friends, maybe a roommate or two... catch up on what's what, without it being overly heavy or serious. for the oldbies, it's a nice time to see who's still about and to ease off a bit. ]

Two months hence, just about! I was one of a large number who arrived then, the first wave as it were, becoming the sole inhabitants of this exceedingly empty city. Thou'rt the third.

[ so still early on, good job. no one she knew came in on this wave... but roland seems to have been blessed with fortune instead. good, she supposes. she misses her cohorts. but good. ]

It has not been long at all, and yet the days feel such. Perhaps it is the tedium, though there are... happenstances which occur every now and then, by not our own making.

[ good information that Reno files away in the back of his mind. three waves so far, the first being maybe the largest—he'd met another who had been here about a month, so the waves seem to be fairly regularly spaced.

What kind of happenstances? [ because so far, everything Reno's seen about the city makes it appear pretty tranquil. no real danger, no monsters, no big baddies lurking in wait to possess the shells of their memetic remnants... ]

Thou'rt new, so thee have yet to see all this place has to offer -- in the very district in which we sit there is a rather unusual site for a city with no need for currency: a bank. Just last month, we found that there were keys with our names upon them, though I do not know if that is the case for those who have just arrived, such as thyself.

[ spoilers: it is not the case. according the locations, you guys are free to just pick a key and use whatever box there is. no names on them. don slips a hand into her blouse to pull out a thin, brown piece of twine from it, on the end being a key that in fact has her name upon the end of it. ]

If curiosity got the better of thee, and thus sought the box which the key would open, then one would find... something of import, it would seem. According to an ally of mine, touching it would cause one to experience memories in relation, I believe, to whatever the item was. I have not opened mine, nor do I intend to 'til I am certain whatever curse is upon those boxes has faded.

[ like, if ever. be funny if she opens it in december and gets hit with what everyone else did. pandora's deposit box. ]

... It was not pleasant, from what I had seen in others. I would suggest thee exercise caution as well.

[ now that is fascinating... a bank, in a city where there's no need for any kind of currency? banks are traditionally strongholds of security and protection—but without money, what exactly are they storing in there?

[ it certainly adds another layer of strangeness to what Reno already knows about this city, and he files it away for consideration later on. he also makes a mental note to not go poking too deeply into the safety deposit boxes, because he's worked hard to tamp down most of his individual traumas and the last thing he needs is that shit getting unearthed. ]

Guessing you ain't heard of anybody getting their weapons or their [ jazz hands ] magic back yet?

[ back into her shirt it goes!!! safe and sound. did you know most people keep theirs someplace off their person? so smart. but don feels better knowing it's in her sight, against her skin. she's not interested in seeing what they've dug up of her past, nor is she interested in sharing it. ]

Nay, not yet. What someone may be able to do is very diminished as well -- I am rather strong for my age, [ her size, ] but I tire much faster when I make use of it. It is inconvenient.

Inconvenient is a pretty word for it. [ Reno can't help but laugh at that—not meanly, just surprised.

"inconvenient" is a comical understatement even for him, who is just a human (albeit a human with Final Fantasy physics) with a stun baton; he can't even imagine what it must be like to have had actual powers, magic, whatever, and wake up in this city to find them gone. ]

All the better that we get to know each other, right? More heads are better if we're trying to figure this place out.

[ sometimes kind words from someone who doesn't give them easily is worth just the same as a round of applause! Reno grins—he knows a few people to whom surprisingly coherent would mean pretty damn good, so he's happy to take that as a compliment. ]

Glad ya liked it! Definitely not the day job, though. [ although maybe being as quick on his feet as he has to be as a Turk helps with poetry? ] We gonna keep playin' or was one dare enough for you?
