I've heard some people consider black cats to be unlucky these days.
(But Tsurumaru recalls a time when they were more auspicious.)
Oh?
(That last part is interesting, though. He can sense this is no ordinary cat (it even feels... kind of familiar? He can't put his finger on it). He wonders if Kai means what Tsurumaru was thinking earlier about superstitions changing...)
no subject
Sometimes lucky. Sometimes not.
[ Unfortunately he's at the mercy of both kinds of stories these days, which at least means they mostly cancel each other out. He has enough things to deal with without being an actual luck charm. Leave that to the manekinekos.
But in the midst of his lolling in Tsurumaru's arms he tips his head to peer up at him. ]
People bring me offerings so I'll tell their fortune.

Offerings?
(Fortunes? A lucky cat? Or maybe...)
no subject
Didn't tell them to. Nobody told them to. Don't know how they came up with it.
[ The creativity in invented stories Kai has found in the modern age has been both fascinating and incredibly annoying. He's managed to fend of at least a few attempts at rewriting him in ways he was absolutely not prepared to deal with, but some things you just can't nudge the internet away from. Every likes a good fortune. ]
Do I look like I know how to tell fortunes?
no subject
(He really wouldn't! He knows some things aren't as they seem. Spirits that are considered unlucky are just unfortunate spirits. Swords known for their violent curses end up being quite gentle. Who's to say a black cat can't bring fortunes?
He can begin to infer some things. He didn't tell them to? Nobody told them? They just came up with it?)
Let's judge for ourselves. Oh, Nekogami, what do you see for me?
(He's teasing. He doesn't really expect a fortune. He's just having fun.)
no subject
[ Even if Tsurumaru isn't serious, Kai still has to grumblingly acknowledge that there's a ritual to the whole thing. Maybe it shouldn't count since he's largely making the fortunes up in the first place, but if he's going to be locked into this mess he may as well get something out of it.
Also he's hungry, but that's not the point. ]
You don't need it anyway. You already know what you want.
no subject
(A little more softly, a little more tired,)
Ah, but I suppose you're right... It doesn't really matter.
no subject
[ Who came up with them? Excellent question. Its the kind of thing Kai has learned not to look at too closely or else will give him a headache. Human do love applying rules to things and unfortunately they tend to stick.
But Tsurumaru is distracting whether or not he he means to be, and Kai peers up at him even as he leans into the fingers. ]
What's wrong?
no subject
(Again with his talk about surprises,)
What you want means nothing when anything can happen.
no subject
It also means you can also make the things you want happen, doesn't it?
[ And that might be an idea Kai has been clinging to, that he can eventually take hold of his own definitions. Slow going, maybe, but at least the intention is there. He has to have some sort of a goal, right? Otherwise what's the point? ]
If no one else is deciding your fate, then you can.
