Sewers... Nothing sounds more stereotypical than having to trudge through sewers. But... You're probably right.

The more the two of the boys travel the farther they'll get into the tunnels. But as much as they mark the walls or count their steps they'll find themselves going on and on. Until eventually the boys will find themselves turned around somehow and going back the way they came. Even if they never turned around... It's frustrating but it seems that what Robby said is true. There's nothing for them to find down here but an endless loop.
So eventually they have to give up... And go home with nothing.]
