eddie's not really one for pleasantries as he starts to lead heine toward the fire escape, which involves them going up about seven stories. having eddie go first might be a good call from a paranoia perspective but it does mean that they move at eddie's pace; which is the pace of a chronic smoker and asthmatic who skipped every gym class he could --- it's slow goings. ] So how'd recruiting for your fights go, Raging Bull?
no subject
also not athsmatic, which means the slow pace up the fire escape is a little entertaining, but heine knows better than to complain. gift horse, mouth, all that. ]
Better than I expected. [ it was surprising enough that he's honest about it now. ] I didn't expect many takers. Got some good fights out of it.
[ he's self-aware enough to know that for most people it's probably weird to be in a better mood after a series of fights in the middle of an intersection, but he is who he is. also: ]
Who the fuck is Raging Bull?

It’s a movie, man. About boxing, I think.
I didn’t see it. [ but he knows about it! which doesn’t matter because when the reach the top of the roof, Eddie guides them toward an area of the place he’s set up two rather plush looking chairs he’d never be able to afford at home. he flops into one, groaning as it irritates the healing scars on his sides and back. he hisses before speaking. ] Make yourself at home, dude.

And because I know you're curious, [ his tone is dry, which is how you know heine is joking, ] it was mostly fists. Only two weapon fights.
[ it's very important research that heine has been conducting here, clearly. and maybe the boxing reference is more apt than he knew, even though heine is not a film buff—wes anderson who?
it's not a bad setup eddie's got here, definitely nicer than where heine lived back home. although many aspects of this city suck, the digs are pretty decent. he's also nursing a couple of unexpectedly tender spots following his fights, so heine is careful as he drops down into the other chair. ] Oh, fuck. That's not bad.

eddie normally has a pocket knife on him, sure, for safety but that's sort of chump change compared to a gun.
when they're both settled, eddie digs a cigarette case out of his pocket and from there pulls out a pre-rolled joint and a well-worn zippo lighter. he looks over at heine from the corner of his eyes first and then turns to him, eyes narrowing slightly. ] Have you smoked a cig before?
[ he kind of needs to know a baseline here to teach the guy what to do. if he needs to teach him, at least. if he can get the hang of it or if this is a hopeless, shotgun with a stranger sort of situation. ]
no subject
with both of his eyes momentarily closed, heine senses the pause more than sees it. he cracks open one eye to look at eddie, then the other, lifting an eyebrow. ]
Cigarettes? Sure. [ not as a regular thing, but you don't spend as much time around badou nails as heine has without picking up at least the concept of how a cigarette works. as appealing as shotgunning with a stranger might be, eddie's off the hook for now. ] You don't have to teach me, if that's what you're asking.
no subject
with that confirmation about cigarettes, he is grinning again. not that he doesn't want to be thinking about people from home (actually, he almost doesn't) but the present is a better topic. especially when the present is weed. ] This is a little different.
You want to hold the smoke in your lungs longer to feel more of the effect with weed. [ then he pauses. ] At least once you get it down.
[ he lights the joint and brings it to his lips, inhaling slowly before pulling it back and then pulling the smoke into his lungs. eddie's probably not the best example to follow on your first go around of it and, well, he's not so much of an asshole to warn that he's not the best lead to follow here. then again, the guy did say he didn't need to teach him so who's eddie to say more or warn heine about coughing?
he exhales and holds the joint out to heine. ]
no subject
impassive as always, heine listens to eddie's instructions and observes the way he inhales before accepting the joint as it's passed. two things heine had learned the hard way when he smoked a cigarette for the first time were 1) if you breathe too deeply the first time, you'll cough, and 2) if you start coughing it's hard to stop, so it's with these two things in mind that he lifts the joint to his own mouth.
his inhale isn't nearly as deep, but almost immediately heine can taste the difference between cigarette smoke and this. it does burn a little even despite his caution, but even though his eyes water a little heine manages not to choke on it as he holds the smoke in his lungs and hands the joint back over to eddie.
a moment, then a slow exhale. ] Tastes... plant-y. [ herbaceous, in a weird way. not like the tobacco heine is used to. ]
