There is a finite amount of light, water, and nutrients that any plant needs. An excess of any can be just as fatal as deprivation. Even the space needed to grow has a maximum before it's unable to expand it's own form. Perhaps you would have a point if we were discussing an animal but, in fact, limited resources are the only thing a plant needs.
