[ Funny, isn't it? Daniel's a car salesman, a volunteer martial arts instructor, but his words echo ones Kim has heard from his peers over and over again -- their spouse, fearing that they're going too far in what they're doing, not believing the gravity of the situation (whether they're right to or not; Kim is first to admit that many officers have an overinflated sense of their own work), and that it eventually ends in them drifting apart. Usually they'd end up a smear on the gutter after that, turning to the same libations as so many other RCM officers. That doesn't seem to be Daniel's go-to, though he could simply be hiding it better, instead pouring himself into work, however much of it he's able to find here. Although it appears that Daniel's enemy, whoever he may be, took it a step further, antagonizing the man when he was with his family, his wife, at some professional function.

He exhales slowly. He likes Daniel. But he can see it from his wife's perspective as well. Fearing that her husband was going to a dark place -- there are few spouses who wouldn't want to separate themselves, their children from all that. Or maybe the right move is to support your spouse, to believe them. Kim doesn't know. He's never been married, and he's never had parents. All he knows is that he is in possession of more of the facts than Daniel's wife was. The evidence that he was facing a very real threat back home had been written all over his face the first time they had met, the ugly bruising crawling up his neck, his voice a mere whisper. ]

God. I'm so sorry. [ Whether Daniel's wife had her points or not isn't important, in the end. She's not the person in front of him now. ] I'm sure people were looking for you, but...

[ There's nothing for them to find. A horrible fate for everyone involved. ]

Abusers can be very charismatic. Very convincing. They can present themselves as upstanding citizens in the public eye. It sounds like this guy did just that. [ He pauses. ] Why the hell did he have it out for you so bad anyway?
