[ The unsettling ambient noise has been easy enough for Vanessa to tune out until he draws away, to which she'll still tilt a bit as if pulled by a string before catching herself and straightening back with a flustered breath.

Another wail, this time of an elderly man, drifts from several rooms away and draws her glance over her shoulder toward the door. She needs to regain sense and stop becoming distracted with wasted pursuits. She isn't going to find what she wanted to in here, but something else could soon find them—something just like or even worse than the parade of his son's entrails. Between them, the terrors on display could go on infinitely.

While Victorians may appreciate mingling horror and romance on Halloween, the city does take it a step too far as it always does. ]
