Even in the split second that it takes for him to wrap his fingers around the handle of the paint can and swing in an arc that he hopes will land a solid hit, but not too hard that he does any sort of lasting damage to Steve's face. It would be just his luck that in his last-ditch efforts at defending himself, he ends up doing something that Steve will never forgive him for.
