He doesn't want to do this.

Not because it's dangerous or anything. He's just so terrible with the manipulation of aether that the thought of attempting to do so in a place where it's so thin sounds like an embarrassment waiting to happen.

And so when he realizes he has no other choice, he heaves out a sigh heavy enough to put one of his dearest friends to shame.]

[The lines on his brow deepen as he concentrates, and after what Hythlodaeus considers an absolutely horrifying delay (in reality only a second or two), a small flame roughly the side one might find at the tip of a candle's wick flickers to life over his fingertip]
