["Always", though...and that scene from before makes him go back on his previous thought. He naturally assumed Distortion. But Daan comes from a world of gods and such, doesn't he?]
[He can't apply the same rules to everything, as much as he wants to.]
[Vergilius starts to move forward, casting his gaze occasionally over his shoulder to make sure Daan is there.]
What is that thing? Explain, now.
no subject
[Though he says it, Daan doesn't quite shake it off. It'll take a bit before he finds his cool again, but to his credit, he's trying.
Even if he wishes he had a drink or two right now.]
Fair question. He's called Pocketcat. Sounds like a stupid name, right? [Daan huffs and rubs the bridge of his nose.] ...When I was growing up, most people just knew him as some kind of... I don't know, monster under the bed? Bogeyman, or whatever.
Well, he's real. A servant, maybe even a slave to Rher. Always trying to crack a deal, even if the cost is more than anyone ought to pay. Even if it's tempting.
no subject
[He shakes his head. If he were in Daan's position, he thinks he might find it ridiculous, perhaps. But a monster is a monster, no matter its origin.]
So its a servant to one of your gods. Huh. So what was with...that scene from before? You...becoming it? Was he taking over?
no subject
[Ultimately, it doesn't matter. What's more important here is that Daan is probably fucked, but he'll try to escape.]
I... hm. I legitimately have no idea. Maybe a potential outcome? Or maybe he's just fucking with me. That wouldn't be surprising, but he's never done visions before. Though his master hasn't had a problem doing that.
no subject
What is his master like? You ever met...it? Him?
no subject
Rher, the Trickster God of the Moon. Ever envious and jealous of all other things, to be perfectly honest. Other gods, and despising when humanity even tries to get some kind of edge on power. He's responsible for some of my difficulties in the last town I was in.
But we've never met, not really. Unless you count the moon just hanging in the sky. I never thought much about it until my experiences in Prehevil.
no subject
Do you think he could exert his influence here?
no subject
Pocketcat himself doesn't really... interfere with things, at least based on how I've interacted with him and seen how he behaved in Prehevil. That doesn't mean he isn't dangerous, despite how he looks.
no subject
If he comes after you, I'll fight him off. [NOT TO SAY HE'S PROTECTIVE DON'T LOOK AT HIM but look, a threat is a threat.] I'm guessing from what I saw he's the tempting sort. You can just say no to him, right?
no subject
[But it's gotten harder to turn away. Harder after Prehevil.
I can be patient, the Pocketcat lilts down the hallway, far and too close. What else do you even have going for you, Daan? An empty house? Too big of a casket, I say, old boy! Revel with me.
Daan stops suddenly and digs his fingers against his face, over his missing eye. He grits his teeth and shudders.
Don't you want answers? It haunts you. My poor little friend. Do you think you'll ever find the truth here, if it wasn't in Prehevil? Let me help you at last. Let me adore you.]
no subject
[And he's moving to wap Daan in the head with the back of his hand.]
Focus. [And a little shaking sigh.] You know, you're not the only one who had to deal with voices tempting things. Tell it to shut up.
no subject
But more importantly--]
Wait, what? You too?
[Well. It can't be that entirely shocking. Isn't Vergilius the type of guy who seems like he has it together? Daan often attempts that presentation himself, after all.]
no subject
[He's letting out a grumbling sound as he turns back around, satisfied by his own ability to use violence to get results.]
At my lowest point, a voice spoke to me. It was quite hard to resist. But we couldn't see eye to eye. Or, well...it was a voice. No eyes there.
no subject
[It isn't exactly something he wishes on another person, and he'd gotten decent for awhile at ignoring Pocketcat's pretty words and promises. Bitterly, he thinks to himself once isn't exactly a comparison to a lifetime, but he does see what Vergilius is more or less trying to say. To relate, to get Daan to keep moving.
So he does, even if there's a strange hint of reluctance.]
Why are you so determined to help me with this?
no subject
[She's biding her time, for every single person in the City.]
Because you look pathetic like that, writhing on the ground like a worm. Can't stand it. Chin up. It looks like a stupid cat, it is a stupid cat. Only you can tell yourself what you need.
no subject
[There's a snort at the response, but Daan doesn't really looked offended. First of all, he gets what Vergilius is saying. Second of all, Daan absolutely believes he looked pathetic as hell in that moment.]
Yeah? And what if he's the only thing that can actually do it, though? I wouldn't usually disagree with you; after all, the world and the people in it don't give a shit and you have to do what you can to figure yourself out.
But there's one thing he's right about. I don't think I can get answers here, or anywhere else. I've exhausted my leads back in my world.
no subject
[A low little hum.]
Answers for what? Getting rid of said gods or something?
no subject
I'm not that altruistic, despite my profession.
But it's a matter that literally has nothing to do with anyone else but me. Even if I told you, it wouldn't do either of us any good. So let's just leave it as that.
no subject
[And he's really not the type to pry outside of general curiosity, either.]
...Guess this city finally showed its fangs with things like this.
no subject
[It's a fraction, but Daan does relax somewhat on the front. Sure, he still looks like hell; though he's always looked exhausted, there's a more distinct bag under his single eye, and he's haggard. But still grateful nonetheless.]
Suppose that it is. Next time some place opens up, I'm not volunteering to go in. You'd think we'd have learned with the bank. Though this is definitely worse.
Hopefully, that damned cat will just fuck off for awhile again after this.
no subject
[A little scoff.]
I can rip off his head for you. It's fine. I've dealt with worse.
no subject
[He sighs. He knows Vergilius has a point, but this still blows!]
Oh? And how would you go about doing that, exactly? Some superpower that isn't even working at full strength? We don't know if he has the same limitations, and I don't even know everything he's capable of.
no subject
[more like Corp bullshit]
True. But I don't need bioaugmentation to be my crutch. Either way, I'd give it a go. Why not. Maybe kick him in the groin for good measure just to see how that works out.
no subject
Well, it's very touching you'd go out of your way to try to kick his ass. Whether for my behalf or otherwise.
Let's just hope it doesn't come to that, hm? I'd be put out if I'd have to patch you up.
no subject
[Now he's the one who's smirking a little.]
I need to stretch my muscles somehow. And come on. A few flesh wounds adds character. Might as well add a few scars to the bunch.
