Certainly there's a more cynical approach to the matter. But succession doesn't mean disposability. Each person who takes on the role has a chance to leave a legacy, and make a mark. That's why each leader is memorable in their own right.

And I don't know about being prepared ... Nothing prepares you for the future. You can make plans, and that's about it, really.
